The Gold Coast Marathon is the most exciting event on the region’s packed sporting calendar and attracts an annual average of 25,000 competitors to the coast each July.
Now in its 34th year, Queensland’s premier sporting event has come a long way since its origins as a local fitness program in the late 70s. The marathon was recently recognised as the best in Oceania, while the 21 km half marathon event has been ranked among prestigious races in London and Berlin as one of the 10 best events of its kind in the world.
The world famous marathon course runs along the beautiful sparkling Broadwater, through the streets of Surfers Paradise to Burleigh Heads for a southern turnaround, stretching out a gruelling 42km past many of the coast’s most renowned beaches. Thanks to its superb coastal views, mostly flat terrain and pleasant winter temperatures, the event is popular with runners from all walks of life, from professional athletes to charity fundraisers.
If you’re planning on taking part this year or would like to support a loved one, Broadwater Shores Runaway Bay accommodation is the ideal base.
